Hard–X-ray diffraction study of charge stripe order in La 1.48 Nd 0.4 Sr 0.12 CuO 4

Abstract: High-energy photon diffraction is used to investigate the charge ordering previously studied by neutron diffraction in La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4. Besides confirming the existence of superlattice peaks due to charge order, the temperature dependence of the peak intensity, width, and position has been determined with improved precision. Furthermore, we show that the scattered intensity has a sinusoidial modulation along c * , consistent with long-range Coulomb interactions between ordered charges within the CuO2 pla… Show more

“…2. In agreement with hard X-ray studies 23,24 , the scattering was sharp along H but rod-like along L (correlation lengths ξ a ≈ 127a, ξ c ≈ 2c), indicating quasi-long-range order in the CuO 2 plane but weak coupling between planes. A maximum intensity of 175 Hz on a fluorescence background of 425 Hz was observed at (0.251, 0, 3/2).…”

“…We have characterized the charge stripe order with highenergy single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD), by probing the associated lattice modulation. 13,14,17 That a modulation of the electron density truly exists, has previously been demonstrated in Ref. 19 for La 1.875 Ba 0.125 CuO 4 by means of resonant soft x-ray scattering.…”

“…While earlier studies have focussed mainly on reflections at low ℓ such as (2±2δ,0,0.5), 13,14,64 it was realized in more recent works that strong CO reflections can also be found at higher ℓ such as ℓ = 5.5 and 8.5. 20,65,66 A conclusive analysis presented by Kim et al in Ref.…”

“…(3) The intensity of the charge-order scattering is strongly modulated along Q z , with maxima at l = n ± 1 2 , where n is an integer. This behavior is straightforwardly explained in terms of unidirectional stripe order tied to local lattice symmetry, with Coulomb repulsion between stripes in equivalent (next-nearest-neighbor) layers [179]. For a checkerboard pattern, one would expect correlations between nearest-neighbor layers, which would give a Q z dependence inconsistent with experiment.…”
