Abstract: We have investigated the electronic structures of Pt/Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) bilayers (prototypical spin-Seebeck devices), by means of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) using synchrotron radiation to reveal the detailed core-level electronic structures near the surface and interface that impact on unconventional magnetotransport properties in Pt/YIG systems. The ion-irradiation tolerance of thermoelectric devices based on the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) was investigated by using 320 MeV gold ion (Au24+) beams modeling cumulative damages due to fission products emitted from the surface of spent nuclear fuels. For this purpose, prototypical Pt/Y3Fe5O12/Gd3Ga5O12 SSE elements were irradiated with varying the dose level at room temperature and measured the SSE voltage of them. We confirmed that the thermoelectric and magnetic properties of the SSE elements are not affected by the ion-irradiation up to 1010 ions/cm2 fluence and that the SSE signal is extinguished around 1012 ions/cm2, in which the ion tracks almost fully cover the sample surface. We also performed the hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements to understand the effects at the interface of Pt/Y3Fe5O12. The HAXPES measurements suggest that the chemical reaction that diminishes the SSE signals is enhanced with the increase of the irradiation dose. The present study demonstrates that SSE-based devices are applicable to thermoelectric generation even in harsh environments for a long time period.

Direct energy conversion has been investigated using Ni/SiC Schottky junctions with the irradiation of monochromatized synchrotron x rays mimicking the gamma rays of 237Np (30 keV) and 241Am (60 keV). Through current–voltage measurements, electrical energies were obtained for both types of gamma rays. The energy conversion efficiencies based on absorbed energy were found to be ∼1.6%, which is comparable to other previously described semiconducting systems. This result raises the prospect of energy recovery from nuclear wastes utilizing the present system, judging from the radiation tolerant nature of SiC. Additionally, we found different conversion efficiencies between the two samples during the same process. This could be explained using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements, suggesting the creation of Ni–Si compounds at the interface in the sample with poor performance. Hence, such combined measurements are useful to provide data that electrical measurements cannot provide us.
