Hardware-Based Network Slicing for Supporting Smart Grids Self-Healing over 5G Networks

Abstract: As a fundamental technology in the Fifth-Generation (5G) mobile networks, network slicing creates multiple logical networks for various vertical businesses over the same physical 5G infrastructure to achieve cost-effective service provisioning. Meanwhile, mission-critical vertical businesses would require a very high level of guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) that is beyond software-based network slicing approaches. In this paper, we address a highly demanding Smart Grid Self-Healing Automatic Reconfiguratio… Show more

“…To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed RAN slicing framework, we consider the smart grid self-healing scenario in [12], where automatic reconfiguration occurs after a shortcircuit fault. The IEDs, smart substation controllers (SSCs), and merging units (MUs) are equipped with 5G interfaces to transmit IEC 61850 messages in a multicell network topology.…”

“…For example, according to the report of Global System for Mobile communications Association (GSMA) 25 that China Telecom, State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), and Huawei completed the first network slice for power grid in 2019. Meanwhile, the work [165] reported a 5G network-based testbed of the self-healing network slice for smart grid. This project has essentially been funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 5G PPP Programme.…”

“…Figure 17 illustrates the SliceNet overall system architecture. The framework applies to many vertical sectors [23], SliceNet UCs in eHealth, Smart Grid [95], and Street Lighting were demonstrated. The deliverable in terms of dissemination, exploitation, and standardization was another achievement of the project [96].…”
