Harmonic generation by yeast cells in response to low-frequency electric fields

Abstract: We report on harmonic generation by budding yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, 10(8) cells/ml) in response to sinusoidal electric fields with amplitudes ranging from zero to 5 V/cm in the frequency range 10-300 Hz. The cell-generated harmonics are found to exhibit strong amplitude and frequency dependence. Sodium metavanadate, an inhibitor of the proton pump known as H+-ATPase, and glucose, a substrate of H+-ATPase, are found to increase harmonic production at low amplitudes while reducing it at large ampl… Show more

“…This low-pass behaviour is consistent with recent experimental findings indicating the absence of harmonic cell response to EM carriers in the mobile-telephone frequency bands [41,42], and the presence of such responses to (very) low frequency fields [43,44].…”

“…Because the SQUID is non-contacting, requiring no measurement electrodes, this technique enables nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy of living cell suspensions without any spurious polarization effects caused by dipole layers at the pick up electrode-medium interface. Details of the nonlinear harmonic response measurement setup for cells in suspension and sample preparations have been reported [9]- [11].…”
