Harnessing Antitumor CD4+ T Cells for Cancer Immunotherapy

Abstract: Over the past decades, CD4+ T cells have been considered as a supporting actor in the fields of cancer immunotherapy. Until recently, accumulating evidence has demonstrated the critical role of CD4+ T cells during antitumor immunity. CD4+ T cells can either suppress or promote the antitumor cytotoxic CD8+ T cell responses, either in secondary lymphoid organs or in the tumor. In this review, we provide an overview of the multifaceted role of different CD4+ T cell subsets in cancer immune response and their cont… Show more

“…An explanation may be related to functional impairment of CD4 T cells, regardless of their circulating levels. Indeed, chronic inflammation and the accumulation of immunosuppressive factors at the metastatic stage can lead to functional alterations in CD4 T lymphocytes, which play a crucial role in the immune surveillance of cancers [ 24 26 ].…”

“…And previous studies have proven that the immune cell infiltration features with a better prognosis were marked by high T cells in CRC patients ( Guo J.-N. et al, 2022 ; Lundberg et al, 2021 ; Zinovkin et al, 2021 ). CD4 + T cells are indispensable in orchestrating antitumor immunity ( Ben Khelil et al, 2022 ). Various subsets of CD4 + T cells play multifaceted roles in the cancer response, including Th2, and Th17 ( Galon and Bruni, 2020 ).…”

“…The high infiltration and activation of CD8 + T cells are positively associated with the prognosis of CRC, suppressing metastasis development of colorectal cancer (Camus et al, 2009;Bruni et al, 2020). D4+T cell subsets had a complicated influence on tumor progression, including Th2, Th17, Tfh and so on (Galon and Bruni, 2020;Ben Khelil et al, 2022). Th17 cells could enhance anti-tumor immunity by producing IL-17 to induce the polarization of M1 macrophage and recruiting anti-tumor immune cells, for example, NK and CD8 + T cells (Al Omar et al, 2013;Guéry and Hugues, 2015;Jang et al, 2017).…”
