Silk fiber, recognized as a versatile bioresource, holds wide-ranging significance in agriculture and the textile industry. During the breeding of silkworms to yield new varieties, optical sensing techniques have been employed to distinguish the colors of silk cocoons, aiming to assess their improved suitability across diverse industries. Despite visual comparison retaining its primary role in differentiating colors among a range of silk fibers, the presence of uneven surface texture leads to color distortion and inconsistent color perception at varying viewing angles. As a result, these distorted and inconsistent visual assessments contribute to unnecessary fiber wastage within the textile industry. To solve these issues, we have devised an optical system employing an integrating sphere to deliver consistent and uniform illumination from all orientations. Utilizing a ColorChecker, we calibrated the RGB values of silk cocoon images taken within the integrating sphere setup. This process accurately extracts the authentic RGB values of the silk cocoons. Our study not only helps in unraveling the intricate color of silk cocoons but also presents a unique approach applicable to various specimens with uneven surface textures.

The Hatay yellow strain of silkworm, Bombyx mori L., 1758 (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) which produces cocoons with an extraordinary yellow color range, is one of the most important endemic and endangered cultural assets in Türkiye. In this study, intense fungal infection and many deaths were detected in the breeding trays in the Hatay yellow breed production facility. An entomopathogenic fungus was isolated from Hatay yellow strain cadavers collected in 2020. According to the morphological and molecular analysis results of the isolate, which was brought into pure culture, it was identified as Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales), the isolate HS1. Phylogenetic analysis results showed that the HS1 strain was very similar (99 %) to the isolates of B. bassiana KJ6 (Iran) and ARSEF 300 (Europe). The concentration-response test using 1 × 104-8 conidia/ml concentrations produced LC50 values of the new strain of 1.2 × 103 and 0.6 × 106 conidia/ml within 7 days against the larvae of Hatay yellow strain and hybrid strain of silkworm, respectively. The results indicated that the virulence of the B. bassiana HS1 strain to the Hatay yellow strain was much more severe and that the Hatay yellow strain had to fight it to survive.

The Hatay yellow strain silkworm (Bombyx mori L.), which is in danger of extinction, is one of the most important local cultural heritages of Türkiye. Bacterial pathogens of silkworm are highly destructive and cause mostly acute diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the bacterial diversity and potential pathogenic bacterial species in infected and dead larvae of Hatay yellow race. A total of 16 bacterial isolates from Hatay yellow race were identified according to their morphological, biochemical and molecular characteristics. The bacterial isolates isolated from infected and dead larvae of Hatay yellow race were Staphylococcus sp. (BM-1), Staphylococcus xylosus (BM-5), Staphylococcus succinus (BM-7), Bacillus thuringiensis (BM-8), Bacillus subtilis (BM-9), Bacillus sp. (BM-10), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (BM-16, BM-19), Klebsiella sp. (BM-17), Staphylococcus arlettae (BM-18), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (BM-20), Enterococcus mundtii (BM-21), Pantoea agglomerans (BM-22), Kluyvera intermedia (BM-23), Serratia sp. (BM-24), Mammaliicoccus sciuri (BM-25). The high bacterial density and number of species indicate that Hatay yellow race is highly susceptible to bacterial diseases. Insecticidal activity studies revealed that species belonging to Bacillus and Staphylococcus genera are important pathogens of hybrid silkworm culture and Hatay yellow race.
