Samples of road dust (RD) from petrol stations (n = 20) located in Rzeszów (Podkarpackie, Poland) were analysed to find potential markers of traffic-related pollution. The level (μg/g) of: Mo, U, As, Hg, Th, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr, Be, Sr, Zr, Zn, Mn and Fe were measured using field portable X-ray spectroscopy (FP-XRF) as a direct, rapid and ‘white analytical technique’. Our research demonstrated for the first time the utility of using FP-XRF for environmental toxicological assessment of RD from petrol stations. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the dust samples tested provides valuable research material for creating and updating regulations and finding pollution hotspots such as petrol stations. It was possible to find potential markers of traffic-related pollution (e.g., Zr and Fe forms of disk brakes or brake pads). Certain elements of the study give ambiguous signals related to fuel distribution and road traffic. They can come from various sources of environmental contamination. The adoption of evidence-based policies to minimise pollution, conserve the environment, and protect the well-being of people living or working near gas stations is anticipated to be aided by these findings for policymakers, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders. Incorporating toxicological risk assessment framework, this study pioneers the investigation of human exposure to hazardous elements in RD, an in-depth evaluation of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks associated with such exposure including lifetime average daily dose. Our findings contribute novel insights into the environmental toxicology of urban areas, emphasising the need for tailored interventions to mitigate these risks.

Benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbers (BUVs), as emerging contaminants of extensive use, especially in plastic sports fields, have aroused increasing concern due to their potential human and environmental impacts. However, BUV exposure from plastic sports field dust is still unknown. This study compared BUVs in plastic sports field dust and indoor dust for the first time. The order of the geometric mean concentrations of the total BUVs (ΣBUVs) in plastic sports field dust was indoor badminton courts (11023 ng g −1 ) > basketball courts (4777 ng g −1 ) > plastic tracks (3779 ng g −1 ) > synthetic turf (1920 ng g −1 ) > tennis courts (689 ng g −1 ). The geometric mean concentrations of ΣBUVs in indoor dust (1150 ng g −1 ) were lower than those in most plastic sports field dust. The dominant BUV was 2-hydroxy-4-(octyloxy)benzophenone (UV-531) in plastic sports field dust, while 2,2′-methylenebis[4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-6-2H-benzotriazole-2-yl)phenol] (UV-360) was the dominant BUV in indoor dust. Releases from plastic track materials, sneaker soles, and friction between them might be important BUV sources in plastic track dust. The average estimated daily intakes of ΣBUVs from plastic sports field dust for general exercisers were lower than those from indoor dust, but those for exercisers with long time or professional athletes might be higher, potentially posing health risks.

The escalating use of plastic products alongside rising ambient temperatures has intensified concerns regarding their performance under diverse thermal conditions. This paper delves into the intricate relationship between plastic materials, ambient temperature fluctuations, and resulting stresses. Various grades of plastic materials are subjected to distinct ambient temperatures to elucidate stress generation—a pivotal aspect in plastic product design. Leveraging the finite element method, a comprehensive analysis is conducted to design and assess a plastic product under specified loads and ambient temperatures. The study encompasses the evaluation of equivalent stresses, normal and shear stresses, and deformations. Ultimately, the research culminates in the development and analysis of a thermally stable plastic product, offering valuable insights for robust design practices amidst evolving environmental conditions.
