Head and Neck Sarcomas: A Comprehensive Cancer Center Experience

Abstract: Head/neck sarcomas are rare, accounting for about 1% of head/neck malignancies and 5% of sarcomas. Outcomes have historically been worse in this group, due to anatomic constraints leading to difficulty in completely excising tumors, with high rates of local recurrence. We retrospectively analyzed cases of head/neck soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and osteogenic sarcomas managed in a multi-disciplinary setting at Fox Chase Cancer Center from 1999–2009 to describe clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment, outcome… Show more

“…Some of the most frequently encountered sarcomas include rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma in children and young adults, and rhabdomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and angiosarcoma in older adults [2,3]. Primary head and neck sarcomas commonly involve the scalp, face, and nasal cavity, while the larynx and upper airway are more unusual sites [1,4,5]. The prognosis is related to the tumor type and extent of resection, which is often incomplete due to anatomic restrictions [5].…”

“…Radiation therapy is followed after resection of all high-grade sarcomas and large tumors, and when margins of resection are closed or microscopically involved. Systemic chemotherapy is recommended for tumors with a significant risk of distant metastases [5]. However, cancer treatment with radiation and chemotherapy methods are also able to trigger other cancers in the body [1].…”
