Head-Group Acylation of Chloroplast Membrane Lipids

Abstract: Head group-acylated chloroplast lipids were discovered in the 1960s, but interest was renewed about 15 years ago with the discovery of Arabidopsides E and G, acylated monogalactosyldiacylglycerols with oxidized fatty acyl chains originally identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. Since then, plant biologists have applied the power of mass spectrometry to identify additional oxidized and non-oxidized chloroplast lipids and quantify their levels in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. The enzyme responsible for t… Show more

“…The acylation process, assessed for the first time on GlcA-DAG and GlcA-MAG in tomatoes, is a metabolic pathway that has been observed in fruits/vegetables or other organisms under stressful conditions . One example is represented by N -acylphosphoethanolamines (NAPE): they are not abundant under physiological conditions, but their biosynthesis in plants increases under abiotic and biotic stresses .…”

“…The acylation process, assessed for the first time on GlcA-DAG and GlcA-MAG in tomatoes, is a metabolic pathway that has been observed in fruits/vegetables or other organisms under stressful conditions. 43 One example is represented by Nacylphosphoethanolamines (NAPE): they are not abundant under physiological conditions, but their biosynthesis in plants increases under abiotic and biotic stresses. 44 Recently, the nutrient depletion-induced production of triacylated glycerophospholipids has been reported in Acinetobacter radioresistans, 45 Staphylococcus hemolyticus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis.…”

“…They can be classified into three groups based on the nature of the glycosyl and acyl structures: monogalactosyl diacylglycerols (MGDG), digalactosyl diacylglycerols (DGDG), and sul-foquinovosyldiacyl glycerols (SQDG) [49]. MGMG is a byproduct of the degradation of accumulated MGDG in the outer membrane of chloroplasts [50].…”
