Health Information Standards

Abstract: This chapter presents an abstract view of the regional health information networks (RHN). A presentation of the architecture and structures of the RHN is included. It also reveals the need for integration of information in the framework of a RHN and key issues for the applicability of health information standards to achieve interoperable health care organizations which are the stakeholders of the RHN are presented. Furthermore, a list of case studies for the implementation of RHN in health systems in European,… Show more

“…In our methodology, we utilized the Unified Modeling Language (UML) Activity Diagrams to draw the flowcharts. While activity diagrams are primarily used in the design phase of software engineering to describe system behavior as a workflow, researchers have also begun utilizing them for modeling clinical workflows (50)(51)(52). Activity diagrams enable us to graphically describe what clinical action needs to take place in which condition in an easy way.…”

“…The risks encountered developing interoperability projects to build RHN structure (Spyrou, Berler, & Bamidis, 2003) are referred mainly to (a) data structure or data availability risks, (b) technical risks (e.g., communication protocol) and (c) organisational risks (e.g., legal data sharing agreements, lack of software vender support) .…”
