Health‐Promoting Interventions for Persons Aged 80 and Older Are Successful in the Short Term—Results from the Randomized and Three‐Armed Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone Study

Abstract: Objectives To examine the outcomes of the Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone study, which was designed to evaluate whether it is possible to delay deterioration if a health‐promoting intervention is made when an older adult (≥80) is at risk of becoming frail and whether a multiprofessional group intervention is more effective in delaying deterioration than a single preventive home visit with regard to frailty, self‐rated health, and activities of daily living (ADLs) at 3‐month follow‐up. Design Randomized, three… Show more

“…We included 19 studies of people who were frail or at risk of frailty: 16 RCTs, 12,13,[56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69] two clusters RCTs 48,70 and one pseudocluster RCT 71 (see Report Supplementary Material 3 for study characteristics). Most (n = 16) compared one intervention to control, with three three-arm trials.…”

“…To be able to refer to a programme as client-centred it is important that the learning experience or the outcome is tailored to the individuals' needs and that it gives meaning and relevance in everyday life (4,16). Research further suggests that in all interventions directed towards a behavioural change, an educational approach that places the individuals in the centre is appropriate for health promotion and for the adoption of new strategies in everyday life (17)(18)(19). Learning will only be successful if the learner is an active participant and if the learning is tailored to the individual's needs and desires (4).…”
