Hearing Aid Fitting Outcome: Clinical Application and Psychometric Properties of a Swedish Translation of the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA)

Abstract: Background: The International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) is a seven-item hearingspecific questionnaire. It was developed with the purpose of evaluating the efficacy of hearing aid rehabilitation. Few psychometric properties have been presented for a Swedish translation of the IOI-HA. Furthermore, previous studies have examined the IOI-HA in mainly sensorineural hearing losses, and we do not know how the type of hearing loss affects the outcome.Purpose: To evaluate the hearing aid fitting outco… Show more

“…The pre-intervention results in the two RCTs are in line with published results from other Swedish studies (Brännström and Wennerström, 2010;Öberg et al, 2007), where hearing aid rehabilitation has been evaluated using the IOI-HA. The outcome of the data is therefore that the participants in the RCT studies were neither more nor less satisfied with their hearing aids before they took part in the online rehabilitation program than general hearing-aid users in Sweden after completing ordinary hearing aid rehabilitation.…”

“…The outcome of these self-reports are aligned with ICF terminology (WHO, 2001) and the domains of activity limitation and participation restriction. A questionnaire that is widely used in studies worldwide and that has been translated into many languages is the International Outcome Inventory of Hearing Aids (IOI-HA, Brännström and Wennerström, 2010;Cox and Alexander, 2002;Cox et al, 2000;. The questionnaire includes questions related to the most important domains (Humes et al, 2001): hearing aid use, hearing aid benefits, residual activity limitation, satisfaction, residual participation restriction, impact on others and quality of life.…”

“…Whether the HAs are fi tted monaurally or binaurally does not seem to infl uence the IOI-HA global outcome (Heuermann et al, 2005;Cook & Hawkins, 2007;Br ä nnstr ö m & Wennerstr ö m, 2010;Hickson et al, 2010), although binaurally fi tted subjects seem to use their HAs more (Stephens, 2002). Binaurally fi tted subjects also report higher scores on the introspection subscale (Kramer et al, 2005), but this may be confounded with the fi nding that these subjects tend to have had their hearing loss for a longer period of time (Stephens, 2002;Kramer et al, 2005).…”

“…The psychometric properties of the IOI-HA have been evaluated for English speaking populations (Cox & Alexander, 2002;Stephens, 2002;Smith et al, 2009;Hickson et al, 2010) and for a few other languages Heuermann et al, 2005; Br ä nnstr ö m & Wennerstr ö m, 2010; Liu et al, 2011) including Danish Jespersen et al, 2005;Vestergaard, 2006). Previous studies indicate that the IOI-HA is infl uenced by two factors, one pertaining to introspection ( ' me and my hearing aid ' ; items 1, 2, 4, and 7) and one to interaction ( ' me and the rest of the world ' ; items 3, 5, and 6) (Cox & Alexander, 2002;Kramer et al, 2002;Stephens, 2002;Vestergaard, 2006;Ö berg et al, 2007;Br ä nnstr ö m & Wennerstr ö m, 2010).…”
