Hearing as a Predictor of Falls and Postural Balance in Older Female Twins

Abstract: People with poor hearing acuity have a higher risk for falls, which is partially explained by their poorer postural control. Auditory information about environment may be important for safe mobility.

“…Indeed, poor hearing has been associated with, for example, poorer postural balance (Agrawal, Carey, Della Santina, Schubert, & Minor, 2009;Viljanen, Kaprio, Pyykkö, Sorri, Pajala, et al, 2009), poorer lower limb performance (Chen et al, 2015;, slower walking speed (L. Li, Simonsick, Ferrucci, & Lin, 2013;Viljanen, Kaprio, Pyykkö, Sorri, Koskenvuo, et al, 2009) and perceived walking difficulties (Chen, Genther, Betz, & Lin, 2014;Viljanen, Kaprio, Pyykkö, Sorri, Koskenvuo, et al, 2009). Impaired hearing also predicts the onset of new walking difficulties and falls (Lin & Ferrucci, 2012;Viljanen, Kaprio, Pyykkö, Sorri, Koskenvuo, et al, 2009;Viljanen, Kaprio, Pyykkö, Sorri, Pajala, et al, 2009).…”

“…Hearing loss has been associated with self-reported falls [Lin and Ferrucci, 2012] and reduced mobility [Viljanen et al, 2009a], linked, in part, to poorer postural control [Viljanen et al, 2009b]. Studies which have directly compared postural sway in hearingimpaired subjects and those with normal hearing have shown both poorer [Kluenter et al, 2009;Huang et al, 2011] and better [Walicka-Cuprys et al, 2014] postural stability in the hearing-impaired.…”

“…21,22 Hearing loss is a predictor of falls and postural balance problems. In one study, 23 patients with poor hearing had a 3-to 4-fold higher risk for falls than did patients with better hearing. This association has not been explained.…”
