Heart Histopathology and Mitochondrial Ultrastructure in Aged Rats Fed for 24 Months on Different Unsaturated Fats (Virgin Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil or Fish Oil) and Affected by Different Longevity

Abstract: Diet plays a decisive role in heart physiology, with lipids having especial importance in pathology prevention and development. This study aimed to investigate how dietary lipids varying in lipid profile (virgin olive oil, sunflower oil or fish oil) affected the heart of rats during aging. Heart histopathology, mitochondrial morphometry, and oxidative status were assessed. Typical histopathological features associated with aging, such as valvular lesions, endomyocardical hyperplasia, or papillary muscle calcif… Show more

“… 2019 ), and sunflower oil (Navarro-Hortal et al. 2019 ), also achieve a similar effect in anti-ageing. Therefore, the present study investigated the active functions on the antioxidative stress of LBSO and showed the effects of L. barbarum on protecting individuals from ageing by antioxidation and anti-inflammation; however, the active components of L. barbarum are yet elusive (Gao et al.…”

“…Previous work in our laboratory with mice fed calorie restricted diets showed that the content of both CoQ 9 and CoQ 10 in skeletal muscle were increased in animals fed soybean oil- or fish oil-enriched diets as compared with those fed diets enriched in lard [ 4 , 5 ]. Aged rats fed a diet supplemented with fish oil showed increased CoQ content in heart as compared to animals fed a diet supplemented with sunflower oil [ 15 ]. However, despite the existing relationship between CoQ and dietary fats, the specific mechanism of CoQ regulation by dietary fat remains to be established.…”

“…The sunflower seed oil, containing both anti-inflammatory (oleic acid, vitamin E, antioxidants, etc.) and pro-inflammatory (linoleic acid) components (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20), has lower anti-inflammatory properties than fish oil (21). Although the anti-or pro-inflammatory effect of sunflower seed oil is still a debate, accumulating evidence suggests that it has anti-inflammatory properties (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20).…”
