Determination of potentially toxic elements in soils with which children have regular contact can provide valuable information to support health risk assessment. It is also important to engage schoolchildren with soil science so that they become well-informed citizens. The Soils in Scottish Schools project involved pupils across Scotland in the collection of soil from school grounds for determination of copper, lead and zinc. Samples were subjected to microwave-assisted aqua-regia digestion to determine pseudototal analyte concentrations. The simplified bioaccessibility extraction test was applied to estimate bioaccessibility. Analysis was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Pseudototal analyte concentrations varied widely: Cu 15.6–220 mg∙kg−1; Pb 24.6–479 mg∙kg−1 and Zn 52.5–860 mg∙kg−1. Higher concentrations were measured in urban areas, which were historically home to heavy manufacturing industries, with lower concentrations in soils from more rural schools. Bioaccessible analyte concentrations also varied widely (Cu 3.94–126 mg∙kg−1; Pb 6.29–216 mg∙kg−1 and Zn 4.38–549 mg∙kg−1) and followed similar trends to pseudototal concentrations. None of the elements studied posed a significant health risk to children through accidental soil ingestion whilst at play during breaks in the school day, although the relatively high bioaccessible levels of lead at some locations are worthy of further investigation.

Cel pracy. Obecność metali ciężkich w wierzchniej warstwie gleby terenów rekreacyjnych przeznaczonych do użytkowania przez dzieci i młodzież może być powodem narażenia na toksyczne pierwiastki drogą pozażywieniową. Jest to szczególnie istotne, gdy place zabaw i boiska są zakładane na terenach silnie uprzemysłowionych, takich jak obszar Górnego Śląska. Celem pracy było oszacowanie wielkości narażenia dzieci i młodzieży drogą pozażywieniową na wybrane metale ciężkie (Cd, Pb, Hg) w wyniku wtórnego pylenia wierzchniej warstwy gleby, powstałego podczas użytkowania placów zabaw i boisk terenu rekreacyjnego Księża Góra w Radzionkowie. Materiał i metody. Materiał badawczy stanowiły próbki gleby pobrane z terenów rekreacyjnych w Radzionkowie. Próbki poddano mineralizacji mikrofalowej, a następnie oznaczono stężenie występujących w nich pierwiastków Cd, Pb i Hg. Na podstawie otrzymanych wyników dokonano szacunkowej oceny narażenia dzieci i młodzieży na analizowane pierwiastki drogą pozażywieniową. Wyniki. Spośród wszystkich przebadanych próbek gleby w przypadku kadmu stężeniami wyższymi od wartości normatywnych w glebach charakteryzowało się aż 88% próbek, natomiast w przypadku ołowiu-78% próbek. Wyniki szacunkowej oceny narażenia wskazują, że w przypadku 46% pobranych próbek gleby istnieje ryzyko wystąpienia negatywnych efektów zdrowotnych narażenia na ołów (hazard quotient-HQ > 1). Wnioski. Próbki gleby pobrane w Radzionkowie wskazują na silne jej zanieczyszczenie metalami ciężkimi, o czym świadczą stężenia kadmu i ołowiu znacznie przekraczające wartości dopuszczalne. Odpowiednie zabezpieczenie powierzchni rekreacyjnych przed pyleniem oraz kontrola zawartości metali ciężkich w miejscach zabaw dla dzieci i młodzieży jest szczególnie istotna, ponieważ pozwoli na zminimalizowanie negatywnego wpływu zagrożeń środowiskowych na zdrowie najmłodszych.

The pollution of urban soils by metals is a global problem. Prolonged exposure of habitants who are in contact with metals retained in soil poses a health risk. This particularly applies to industrialized cities with developed transport networks. The aim of the study was to determine the content and spatial distribution of mobile metal fractions in soils of the city of Łódź and to identify their load and sources. Multivariate statistical analysis (principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA)), combined with GIS, were used to make a comprehensive evaluation of the soil contamination. Hot-spots and differences between urban and suburban areas were also investigated. Metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after soil extraction with 1 mol L−1 HCl. In most sites, the metal content changes in the following order: Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cd. About one-third of the samples are considerably (or very highly) contaminated, (contamination factor, CF > 3) with Cu, Pb, or Zn. In almost 40% of the samples, contaminated soils were found (pollution load index, PLI > 1). All metals have a strong influence on the first principal component (PC1), whereas second principal component (PC2) is related to pH. Polluted soils are located in the downtown, in the south and east part of the city. The distribution of contamination coincides with the urban layout, low emission sources and former industrial areas of Łódź.
