Heavy metals concentration in edible fishes from coastal region of Kalpakkam, southeastern part of India

Abstract: Concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe, Cr, and Pb were estimated using ICP-MS in nine commercially important and locally consumed fish species (Sarda orientalis, Scomberomorus commerson, Rastrelliger kanagurta, Sardinella longiceps, Paraplagusia bilineata, Cynoglossus lida, Cynoglossus macrostomus, Lepturacanthus savala, and Siganus javus) collected from coastal waters of Kalpakkam, eastern part of India. Their concentration (μg g(-1)) in the examined fish species ranged as follows: Cu (0.8-6.5), Zn (14.3-27.9), Mn… Show more

“…The highest metal accumulations were found in the years of 2009-2011. Pb and Cd accumulation of muscle is found higher than the studies of Despande et al, (2009) and Khoshnood et al, (2012). Pb accumulation of muscle values are higher than of the literature values (Biswas et al, 2012). Cd and Pb values are lower than the reported data from literature (Mukherjee and Bhupander, 2011;Victor et al, 2012;Rejomen et al, 2010;Saravanumurugan et al, 2013), while Cd values of this study are higher than Bhupander et al (2012).…”

“…But, their high concentrations have lethal effects on fish and other aquatic biota especially in case of prolonged exposure (Abdel-Khalek, 2015). Among metals, some are potentially toxic (As, Cd, Pb, Hg), others are probably essential (Ni, V, Co) and many are essential (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn) (Biswas et al, 2012). These essential metals can produce toxic effects when the metals intake is excessively elevated (Tekin-özan, 2008).…”

“…and these values were lower than the previous reports (Turkmen et al, 2009;Biswas et al, 2011). Zinc, is an essential micronutrient and as a constituent of many enzymes, it is responsible for certain biological functions, for which relatively higher level is required to maintain them (Heath, 2000).…”

“…Average manganese contents of the fish samples were varied from 0.08-0.84 µg g -1 in gill and muscle and these values are lower than the previous reports (Uluozlu et al, 2007;Biswas et al 2011). Manganese is an essential element for both animals and plants and its deficiency results in severe skeletal and reproductive abnormalities in mammals (Sivaperumal et al, 2007).…”
