Heavy Metals Distribution in the Artisanal Gold Mining Area in Wonogiri

Abstract: Artisanal and small gold mining activity in Wonogiri Regency has long been done with problems on environmental quality. This study was aimed to analyze the levels and spatial distribution of heavy metals in the mining area. Survey of  mining and amalgamation sites, sampling the soil and tailings had been conducted. There were 66 samples of soil and tailing were collected, analysis of heavy Fe, Mn, Pb, Hg, As and Co, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Normal distribution test of data was conducted using the Kolmog… Show more

“…The average natural level of Zn in the Earth's crust is 70 mg/kg (dry weight). Fe is the primary mineral compound that is the dominant element in weathered rocks (Fashola et al, 2016;Nurcholis et al, 2017). Cr is widely distributed in soils and rocks where it occurs in minerals such as chromite, and its concentration ranges below 60 mg/kg in natural soil.…”

“…Mn in mineral soil derived from weathering rocks forms Mn oxides when the reaction in soil is oxidative in nature. In the soil environment, Mn is generally concentrated in part of the soil profile (Nurcholis et al, 2017).…”

“…In particular, herpetofauna has been extensively used as bioindicators of habitat damage since they play an important role in ecosystems as part of the food chain (Fabian et al 2013) Selogiri Sub-district, Wonogiri District, Central Java Province, Indonesia, is an area with a high potential for gold deposits. As a consequence, some villages in this subdistrict attract many people to extract the gold resource contained in the village (Nurcholis et al 2017). The artisanal mining activities have an impact on the ecosystem environment in the Selogiri Sub-district, including flora and fauna.…”

“…The existence of heavy-trace metals, especially lead, due to mining activities in the environment, has caused a great deal of concern owing to its toxicity to human life (Moors and Dijkema, 2006, Montanaro et al, 2001, Nurcholis et al, 2017. Leaching of the poisonous metals unavoidably will pose a hazard to the environment and public health worldwide (Ye et al, 2015).…”
