Trace metal concentrations were determined in six species of intertidal organisms common to the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon . Lead, cadmium, nickel, iron, and zinc were highest in the polychaete, Hermodice carunculata, but the eggs of the sea urchin, Arbacia lixula, had similar iron levels and the sea anemone, Actinia equina, had zinc concentrations which also approached levels in the polychaete . The highest copper occurred in the shore crab, Pachygrapsus transversus, while chromium was highest in the eggs of Arbacia lixula . Cystoseira spinosa, the only alga studied, had average copper and iron concentrations similar to those found in the same species in another study . Together with the sea urchin eggs, C. spinosa exhibited the most variable zinc levels in the present investigation . The fish, Thalassoma pavo, which is rather common along the rocky coastal areas of Lebanon, appeared to have fairly high concentrations of certain elements in relation to levels reported in species of fish from other locations .Sewage, garbage, industrial and agricultural waste materials all enter the Mediterranean from Lebanon without prior treatment, which along with increased land erosion, probably contribute substantially to the availability of metals to the biota studied . It is suggested that more work on trace elements in coastal organisms from the eastern Mediterranean basin be undertaken before any conclusive statements are made . Such work should also investigate the various physiological and biochemical factors involved in metal uptake and retention by each species .

Fish samples were taken monthly over an eight-hour day period between 1973 and 1975. In addition, separate night samples were collected during 1974-75. The present study considers the sprat component of the catch and examines aspects of the fish's biology and its accumulation of chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds and heavy metals.Sprats were present on every sampling date and, generally, totals were highest during late autumn/early winter. They formed 61.1 % of the catch by numbers and 17.5% by weight.Night samples contained an unexpectedly large number of sprats and with mean lengths significantly greater than those in day samples. Changes in monthly length-frequency distributions suggested double spawning during 1974, perhaps the result of a mild winter.Sprats were infected with two copepod ectoparasites; Lernueenicus spruttue (Sowerby) and L. encrusicolu (Turton). In each case infection was low, affecting only 6.6 and 0.9% of the population respectively. Levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals were also low in whole sprat tissue. Values of ZDDT, dieldrin and PCBs were at a maximum in winter and minimum in spring. Heavy metal results showed no seasonal pattern.

On the transfer of several trace elements in neritic and estuarine food chains:Bioaccumulation in omnivorous and carnivorous fishes. Five species of fishes (Dicentrarchus labrax, Gobius microps, Stizostedion lucioperca, Gadus luscus, Merlangius merlanffus) and their major prey organisms were collected monthly from two stations in the Loire estuary (France). The levels of several trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) in their tissues were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cu were shown to decrease in the highest trophic levels: the relatively highest metal levels were determined in annelids, followed by crustaceans, the lowest levels being encountered in fishes. However, a preferential uptake of Cu was observed in crustaceans. There is no biomagnification for these three metals, the concentrations in preys being generally lower than in predators. For Zn, the highest concentrations were measured in worms and copepods but preys such as shrimps and mysids exhibit values of the same order of magnitude compared to predator fishes.
