Helical Coordination Polymers from Achiral Components in Crystals. Homochiral Crystallization, Homochiral Helix Winding in the Solid State, and Chirality Control by Seeding

Abstract: An achiral anthracene−pyrimidine derivative (5-(9-anthracenyl)pyrimidine, 1) forms adduct 1·Cd(NO3)2·H2O·EtOH (2) in chiral space group P21. The metal ion is hexacoordinated with two pyrimidine ligands (equatorial cis), water and ethanol (equatorial cis), and two nitrate ions (axial trans). The chirality arises from a pyrimidine−Cd2+ helical array and is preserved not only in each crystal via homochiral interstrand water−nitrate hydrogen bonding but also in all the crystals in the same chirality as a result of… Show more

“…Chiral ligands can be used for the generation of homochiral porous MOFs, or chirality can be induced from the arrangement of achiral ligands within the structure. [54][55][56][57] Among the chiral ligands available, [58][59][60][61][62][63][64] bio-ligands, such as natural occurring peptides, are structurally rich and versatile with numerous metal binding sites. However, robust and highly porous MOFs based on these ligands are scarce in the literature.…”

“…In 1999, Aoyama et al reported the fi rst example of crystallizing homochiral MOF based on Cd 2 + ions and achiral 5-(9-anthracenyl)pyrimidine (apd) bridging linker. [ 32 ] The chirality of the helical compound arises from a metal-ligand helical due to carboxyl and aromatic ring vibrations. The appearance of just one enantiomer from the totally achiral components was observed, possibly as a result of seeding.…”

“…[72][73][74][75][76] Recent literature cites claims of insignificantly small but still questionable differences seen between chiral isomers in their condensed states, like in supersaturated solutions, in crystals, in micellar aggregates, and on solid surfaces, etc. [77][78][79] Such a finding can have far-reaching implications, since, according to their propositions, these asymmetrical weak nuclear forces propagate to millions of other molecules via weak noncovalent interactions and land-up building asymmetrical population preferring a particular handedness.…”
