Helicity Injection by Knotted Antennas into Electron Magnetohydrodynamical Plasmas

Abstract: A fully three-dimensional computer simulation of an ideal electron magnetohydrodynamical plasma is performed. By introducing various pulsed inductive antenna sources, magnetic helicity (H R A ? B dV ) injection is studied. Confirming experimental results, a simple loop provides no net helicity injection. Linked and knotted antennas, however, do inject helicity and preferentially radiate whistler wave packets parallel or antiparallel to the ambient magnetic field. Relative efficiencies of these antennas are rep… Show more

“…The role of magnetic helicity -the scalar product of the magnetic field with the magnetic vector potential -on electron MHD has been investigated experimentally through the production of electron MHD heat pulses and the study of their transport (Stenzel et al 1995;Stenzel and Urrutia 1996;Rousculp and Stenzel 1997). In turbulence, the first effect reported in the literature is from two-dimensional direct numerical simulations.…”

“…Earlier experiments have reported antenna directionality. 21,22 The antennas consisted of a current knot or a torus with a linked loop through the center. Such antennas produced helical fields matching the helicity of whistler waves.…”

“…We can use to our advantage one of the properties of the wave, its helicity. This property is used in Rousculp antenna design [6]. The antennas are designed to have a preferred helicity injection direction, i.e., they couple to the plasma preferentially along one direction.…”
