Helicobacter pylori infection: relation with cardiovascular risk factors, ischaemic heart disease, and social class.

Abstract: Objective-To determine whether Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with the development of ischaemic heart disease and whether such infection can explain the social class inequality in ischaemic heart disease. Design-Cardiovascular risk factor levels, prevalence of ischaemic heart disease (Rose questionnaire angina, and/or a history of myocardial infarction), and serum antibodies to H pylori (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) were assessed in a cross sectional population based survey.

“…Parent et al [2] have been reported prevalence of HP is 56% in healthy individuals and there is not a significant relationship between HP infection and, lipid, haemostatic and inflammatory factors. Publications that support this work as well as [3], there are studies that report an association between HP infection, and ischemic heart disease, plasma fibrinogen, and some lipid parameters [4]. The changes in hemoglobin, white blood cell and platelet values may occur in acute and chronic infectious diseases.…”

“…Helicobacter pylori status does not influence inflammatory parameters and cardiovascular risk factors in healthy individuals [1]) may not necessarily apply to patients with ischaemic heart disease or hypertension; however, it should be emphasized that in subjects with disease states any association between H. pylori and cardiovascular risk factors may be more easily spurious and attributed to unestimated confounders or selection bias. Indeed, despite a series of studies suggesting the existence of correlation between chronic H. pylori infection and various possible vascular risk factors, including fibrinogen [2], leucocyte count [2], blood lipids [3] or C-reactive protein [4], a recent systematic review of all the available evidence on these factors and H. pylori has produced results against the existence of any important correlation between this bacterium and a number of vascular risk factors [5]. It is also true that in many of the aforementioned studies, as well as in the series presented by Lip et al, the concomitant influence of other bacteria (e.g.…”

“…However, this observation may not necessarily apply to disease states, where (for example) an association between H. pylori infection and ischaemic heart disease, plasma fibrinogen and some lipoprotein levels has previously been reported [2]. We studied the relationship between H. pylori infection, haemorheological factors (haematocrit, white cell count, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen), von Willebrand factor (an index of endothelial damage or dysfunction [3], soluble P-selectin (an index of platelet activation [4]), blood pressure and lipids in 124 hypertensive patients (61 males: mean age 53.2 years, SD 14.7 years) who were attending a hypertension outpatient clinic.…”
