Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) 2011-2012

Abstract: There is a discernable increase of HSCT rate in the EMRO region with a significant expansion in utilization of cord blood transplants and allogeneic peripheral blood-HSCT as a valuable source. However, further research of outcome data and the development of regional donor banks (cord blood and matched unrelated donors) may help to facilitate future planning to satisfy the escalating regional needs and augment collaboration within the EMBMT and globally.

“…16 Moreover, CB transplants are being utilized more, so establishing regional CB banks will support the expanding need for alternative donation sources. 16 Currently five private CB banking companies offer collection services in Jordan with costs reaching $3000 to $4000 per unit for 20-year storage. 8,17 These companies target their services toward families at private hospitals.…”

“…Autologous peripheral blood stem cells can promote fast hematopoietic reconstitution, reduce the risk of infection, and reduce graft‐versus‐host disease. Moreover, compared with bone marrow, autologous peripheral blood cells can be easily obtained. Special attention should be paid to certain complications, such as infection.…”

“…The risk of FA is significantly higher in the presence of consanguinity, which is prevalent in many countries that make up the Eastern Mediterranean region [17]. Bone marrow failure is the second most common indication for allo-HSCT in the Eastern Mediterranean region [18]. In this study, we present a retrospective multicenter analysis of the experience of Eastern Mediterranean Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (EMBMT) of HSCT from HLAmatched related donors for patients with FA.…”
