Hemoglobinopathies in the Sudan

Abstract: In a prospective study, we evaluated hematological parameters in freshly obtained venous blood samples from 632 Sudanese patients attending the outpatient department at Khartoum Teaching Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan, in the period between March and July 2005. The patients were surveyed for full blood count (FBC) and hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis using a cellulose acetate method. Hb S [beta6(A3)Glu-->Val] was the most common abnormal Hb, which was not unexpected because the subjects live in the center of a malar… Show more

“…Our findings reflect that healthy adults from the Aljouf region have also some hematological parameters differing quantitatively from Arab [19,21], Caucasians [25,26], Asian [23,27] and African [20,28,29], while other hematological parameters have reference value profiles which are similar to these ethnic groups [18,20,21,23,26,27,29].…”

“…Previously published studies indicate that Hb S is common among Sudanese tribes, particularly in the Western regions (Kordofan and Darfur). Furthermore, haemoglobinopathies are also known to be prevalent in the Blue Nile and Northern tribes (Elderdery et al. , 2008).…”

“…The activity of cytochrome b5 reductase was measured spectrophotometrically by monitoring NADH oxidation (via ferricyanide reduction) at 340 nm (Haymond et al , 2005). Hemoglobin electrophoresis was performed on cellulose acetate (Elderdery et al , 2008), and the ratio of a fast-moving band (Hb-X) relative to Hb-A was defined using AlphaEaseFC software (Alpha Innotech, USA).…”
