Hemostatic Function in Healthy Pregnant and Preeclamptic Women: An Assessment Using the Platelet Function Analyzer (PFA-100??) and Thromboelastograph??

Abstract: We conclude that impairment of primary hemostatic function with increasing severity of preeclampsia was recorded by the PFA-100 but not the TEG.

“…5.3 Our finding of a trend of lowering of platelet count with increasing severity of pregnancy induced hypertension is consistent with Srivastava (1995) [12] , Jambhulkar (2001) [13] , Joshi et al (2004) [14] , J.Davies et al (2007) [15] and Ellora Devi et al (2012) [16] . 5.4 L. A.…”

“…The severe preeclampsia showed a significant low count with P<0.05 & eclampsia was found to be very significantly lowered with a P<0.01. J.Davies [15] reported a mean of 2.57 lakh/cmm for controls, 2.30 lakh/cmm for mild pre eclampsia and significant low count of 1.77 lakh/cmm for severe pre eclampsia. Similarly Ellora Devi et al (2012) [16] mentioned the mean platelet count of 2.44 lakh/cmm , 1.82 lakh/cmm for controls & mild pre eclampsia respectively and significantly lower for severe pre eclampsia with a count of 1.42 lakh/cmm.…”

“…Also the fibrinolytic activity is impaired during pregnancy: tissue plasminogen activator activity decreased during pregnancy, due to the gradual increase in plasminogen activator-1 (PAI-1). but also to the increasing levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-2 (PAI-2) produced byvillous cells [22]. However the fibrinolytic activity return rapidly to normal following delivery.…”

“…The collagen membrane used in PFA-100 is impregnated with platelet activators (ADP and epinephrine). Mean closure time using epinephrine was reported as 105±18 seconds [35] and 114.6±27.3 seconds [36] in 93 and 110 healthy pregnant women respectively. Both studies did not include a control group of non-pregnant women.…”

“…It is important that laboratories analyzing coagulation profile in pregnant women should use these reference intervals. Moreover, reference intervals for global hemostatic testing such as platelet function [35,36] and thromboelastography [57,59] in normal pregnancy have also been defined.…”
