Hemostatic powder spray: a new method for managing gastrointestinal bleeding

Abstract: Gastrointestinal bleeding is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. The management of gastrointestinal bleeding is often challenging, depending on its location and severity. To date, widely accepted hemostatic treatment options include injection of epinephrine and tissue adhesives such as cyanoacrylate, ablative therapy with contact modalities such as thermal coagulation with heater probe and bipolar hemostatic forceps, noncontact modalities such as photodynamic therapy and argon plas… Show more

“…In addition, it has also been postulated that the powder may activate the clotting cascade along with aggregating platelets, forming a fibrin plug. 8 The mechanical barrier formed sloughs off from the mucosa within 24-72 h. 9 As the powder swells and hardens only in the presence of moisture and disappears within a short period of time, its use in high-risk lesions such as in nonbleeding visible vessels is unlikely to decrease the risk of rebleeding. 6 Hemospray is currently approved in Canada; Mexico; and several countries in the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Asia for upper gastrointestinal tract use.…”

“…The role of topical haemostatic agents in non‐variceal upper GIB is well established, but its use in lower GIB is unclear. There are early data reporting success in conditions such as post‐polypectomy bleeding, angiodysplasia, proctitis and diverticulosis.…”

“…The role of topical haemostatic agents in non‐variceal upper GIB is well established, but its use in lower GIB is unclear. There are early data reporting success in conditions such as post‐polypectomy bleeding, angiodysplasia, proctitis and diverticulosis. Topical haemostatic powders are an attractive option in diverticular bleeding as they are non‐thermal, non‐contact and do not require precise targeting on widespread diverticulosis .…”
