Abstract:This essay explores some consequences of James’s representation of Adam Verver as a capitalist innocent of his profits. The character is examined in the light of the formal program for the novel described in the preface. The Golden Bowl is shown to question at the same time that it affirms a narrative practice in which facts and histories are effaced.
