Hepatic Resection for Disseminated Germ Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Improvements in operative technique and perioperative management have expanded the application of hepatic resection for metastatic cancer. Although a policy of aggressive surgical resection of residual pulmonary and retroperitoneal disease following chemotherapy and normalization of serum tumor markers has been adopted for disseminated germ cell carcinoma, resection of residual hepatic disease in these cases has not been addressed. This report concerns a series of prospectively randomized patients who received… Show more

“…However, the strategy of further treatments may vary for patients with bulky visceral metastases. High-dose chemotherapy with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is a vital option, although the 5-year survival rates of such cases remain below 50% [4,7]. Few recent treatment analyses of longterm results in patients with advanced liver metastases were reported.…”

“…These patients become candidates for cytoreductive therapy. In the previous report from Indiana University, 1 hepatic resection has been shown to be a safe and efficacious cytoreductive therapy for testicular carcinoma. The purpose of this report is to update the previous work and again to help define the role of surgery for these patients.…”
