Hepatitis B Virus and HIV Infection

Abstract: Approximately 5 to 10% of human immunodeficiency virus- (HIV-) infected persons worldwide have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). The management of these patients merits special attention. They experience a faster progression to cirrhosis and more frequent liver-related death than HBV-monoinfected individuals. For this reason, therapy for both HIV and HBV is a priority in most cases. Some antivirals (i.e., tenofovir, lamivudine, emtricitabine) are active against both viruses and should be part of the antiretrovi… Show more

“…The individual patient data were collected retrospectively, resulting in partially incomplete information on several key variables such as HIV-coinfection. This is of importance as the epidemiological and clinical determinants of HBV infection are linked to the presence of HIV-coinfection [ 31 ]. It also underlines the importance of conducting prospective, large cohort studies dedicated to the study of HBV infection.…”

“…Both the risk of HBV infection and that of chronicity are increased in HIV‐seropositive persons . Chronic HBV infection is found in 5–10% of HIV‐positive persons worldwide and co‐infected persons show increased rates of progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer and a higher mortality than persons with either infection alone .…”

“…Preliminary data indicate that the development of multiple lamivudine associated mutations may even reduce the efficacy of tenofovir therapy [ 4 ]. However, we have a good number of patients who are on lamivudine therapy with excellent viral response who need a continuous followup to observe the development of LAM resistance.…”
