Hepatitis C infection in Egypt: prevalence, impact and management strategies

Abstract: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health burden in Egypt, where it bears the highest prevalence rate in the world. Estimates for prevalence are based upon data reported from the 2008 and 2015 Egypt Demographic Health Surveys. In this review, we demonstrate the prevalence results of both surveys and analyze the difference in the results. The overall HCV prevalence is estimated to be declining. However, the clinical impact of chronic HCV infection is expected to grow considerably. A mathematica… Show more

“…In Egypt, the prevalence of HCV infection is the highest in the world,13,14 and genotype-4 is the most prevalent genotype 1517. Although screening for HCV is recommended18,19 and the current available screening test has a 97% sensitivity and 100% specificity,20–22 up to 60% of cases in Egypt are diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis or HCC23,24 mainly due to the lack of a national screening program.…”

“…The virtually designed 1H-imidazole-2,5-dicarboxamide appeared to satisfactorily reproduce the stereochemistry of these NS4A features. Indeed, we could experimentally confirm that such compounds display binding affinity towards NS3 genotype-4, the most abundant type in the Middle East [49,50]. Our work allowed quantifying the binding affinity of our designed MOC compounds.…”

“…A national database was also established to monitor HCV elimination progress. Furthermore, the National Committee for Control of Viral Hepatitis was able to negotiate with Gilead Sciences to provide sofobuvir at a reduced price of 300 USD per bottle (compared to 28,000 USD per bottle in the United States) …”

(44,45) Australia has made progress in eliminating HCV by initiating DAA treatment in 32,400 patients, a 10-fold increase from the previous year and equating to 14% of the total patients with HCV nationally. (46) There were two main factors contributing to this success.…”
