Hepatitis C virus exposure rate among health-care workers in rural Lower Egypt governorates

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Studies on hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Egypt supported a strong role for various exposures in the health-care setting. In this study, we attempted to estimate the frequency of HCV exposure among Egyptian health-care workers (HCWs). Methods: Five hundred and sixty-four (564) HCWs were included in this study. Two hundred and fifty-eight (45.74%) were health-care providers and 306 (54.25%) were non-health-care providers. All HCWs completed both the study questionnaire and provided a bloo… Show more

“…Anti-HCV prevalence among the enrolled HCWs was 19 (9.4%). Similar finding was announced by Elbahrawy et al, (11) at Lower Egypt governorates and by Anwar et al, (12) in Ain Shams hospitals in Cairo where the frequency of HCV among HCWs was 8.7% and 8.00%, respectively. Higher prevalence was reported in the study carried by El-Sokkary et al, (13) who found that the prevalence of HCV infection among HCWs in Zagazig University Hospital was 37.7%.…”

“…In accordance, it was estimated that HCV RNA positivity increased with age. (11) Even after multivariate analysis, old age remained a risk factor for HCV positivity among both groups. Increased HCV occurrence with increasing age may be explained by decreased Immunity with advanced age as a result of potential exhaustion of T-cell repertoire over time following multiple stimulations.…”

“…Since then until 2018, no significant change in anti‐HCV prevalence was noted among HCWs (Figure 2e). Based on the results published after national HCV treatment, the anti‐HCV prevalence varied from 4.6% to 16.6% 154–158 . Currently, there is no effective postexposure prophylaxis established against HCV infection.…”
