Hepatitis C virus infection in patients with leukemia

Abstract: We have studied 30 patients with acute leukemia by the second-generation assay for antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) to determine the incidence of HCV infection and the impact of anti-HCV positivity on liver disease. After a complete remission, 21/30 (70%) patients were anti-HCV-positive. During chemotherapy the anti-HCV-positive patients had more severe liver disease than the anti-HCV-negative patients, and they had a higher incidence of chronic hepatitis (13/21; 62% vs. 1/9; 11%, P < 0.01). During subseq… Show more

“…This was also conferred in the literature by showing that the prevalence of HCV was higher in leukemic children than the ones with solid tumors [30]. Although familial transmission routes were reported in some cases, there was only one person detected positive for anti-HCV within the family members of the screened children.…”

“…Some studies show minor liver pathology after 10 to 30 years of follow-up, while others report significant pathological changes in a few years (7,13,23,25,27). In most of the earlier studies the genotype of HCV was not included, and this may explain such differences.…”

“…(2) after DAA therapy has induced a sustained virologic response (SVR), is there a risk of HCV recurrence following immunosuppressive chemotherapy? and (3) could antiviral therapy years ago have prevented the development of this lymphoma, and is chemoprevention a valid indication for DAA therapy in HCV-infected patients with no evidence of hepatic fibrosis?…”
