Liver problems are a worldwide concern, and conventional medicinal therapies are ineffective. Hence, safeguarding the healthy liver is vital for good health and well‐being. Infections due to virus, immune problems, cancer, alcohol abuse, and an overdose of drugs are some of the causes of liver diseases. Antioxidants derived from medicinal plants and conventional dietary sources can protect the liver from damages caused by oxidative stress system and various chemicals. Plants and plant‐derived phytochemicals are appealing hepatoprotective agents since they have less side effects and still there is a lot of interest shown in using herbal tonics for treating liver disorders. This review therefore primarily focuses on newly discovered medicinal plants and compounds produced from plants that fall under the classifications of flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, polyphenolics, sterols, anthocyanins, and saponin glycosides, all of which have the potential to be hepatoprotective. Hosta plantaginea, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Daniella oliveri, Garcinia mangostana, Solanum melongena, Vaccinium myrtillus, Picrorhiza kurroa, and Citrus medica are some potential plants having hepatoprotective effects. We conclude that these phytochemicals and the plant extracts listed above are used in the future to treat a variety of liver diseases, additional research is still needed to develop safer and more potent phytochemical drugs.

Background and Objective: Hepatitis is a liver illness caused by a viral infection, autoimmune conditions or the use of certain medicines.In molecular hepatitis treatment, cytochrome c can be used as a potential predictor of the severity of liver impairment. In Asia, particularly in Indonesia, antioxidant-rich plants include Ficus carica and Olea europaea. This study aimed to see what impact cytochrome c in hepatitis after these two botanicals were administered. Materials and Methods: Rats were grouped as follows: Normal rats with no additions or herbs (G 0 ), the physiological solution group (G 1 ), the intravenous administration of the quercetin-copper (II) (G 2 ), Olive leaf extract or OLE (300 mg kgG 1 b.wt.) (G 3 ) and Tin leaf extract or TLE (100 mg kgG 1 b.wt.) (G 4 ). For an animal model of hepatitis, the rats were given thioacetamide 280 mg kgG 1 b.wt., 8 days later. The rats were dissected and blood and liver samples were collected for enzyme and immunohistochemistry examination. Results: Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and cytochrome c expression levels differed significantly (p<0.05) across treatment groups in ratʼs models of hepatitis. Hepatocytes first displayed symptoms of lipid degradation, inflammatory and necrosis cells. When administered quercetin and the two herbs, necrosis and inflammatory cells were reduced, demonstrating that OLE and TLE can enhance liver histology and lower cytochrome c expression in a mouse model of hepatitis. Conclusion: Administration of Olive leaf extract (OLE) and Tin leaf extract (TLE) can improve liver histology in hepatitis model rats while decreasing cytochrome c expression, which is a mechanism for hepatocyte cell death.

In the present work, electrospun membranes of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers were manufactured using extracts and phenolic fractions of Dysphania ambrosioides (epazote), Opuntia ficus-indica (nopal), and Tradescantia pallida (chicken grass). The characterization of the membranes was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The membranes synthesized through the use of the extracts generally showed a slight decrease in the diameter of the fibers but an increase in the size of the pores due to the presence of nanoparticles (rosaries) on the surface of the fibers, while the membranes synthesized using the phenolic fraction demonstrated an inversely proportional relationship between the compounds of this family with the diameter of the fibers and the size of the pore, allowing to elucidate part of the polymerization mechanisms of PVP nanofibers, in addition to proposing a reaction mechanism in the interaction between PVP and phenolic compounds for surface functionalization. Likewise, we demonstrate that the generation of reaction seeds through functionalization allows the addition of other compounds to the fibers in the membranes synthesized using the complete extract.
