Hepatoprotective Effect of Carrot (Daucus carota L.) on Paracetamol Intoxicated Rats

Abstract: Plant products play a crucial role in the hepatoprotection through its antioxidants property. Therefore, search for modern medicine of plant origin with this property has become a central focus on hepatoprotection today. This study investigated to search a new hepatoprotective agent from natural sources, the methanol extract of nutitional plant, Daucus carota leaves was tested against liver damage of albino rats. Levels of serum marker enzymes i.e. SGOT, SGPT (aminotransferases), ALP (alkaline phosphatase) and… Show more

“…Carbon tetrachloride increases ALAT and ASAT level along with lipid peroxidative enzymes, for example superoxide dismutase and catalase in liver. These may reflect damage to the liver tissues resulted in leakage of these enzymes into the blood. When hepatotoxicity in mice were induced by CCl4 significant elevation in the level of LDH and liver trasaminases was observed with respect to control group while pretreatment with carrot extract caused a significant decline in the level of LDH as compared with CCl4 treated group [35]. According to Al-Snafi et al (2019), when carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity mice were treated significant (p<o.oo1) reduction in the level of ALP, AST, ALT was found with respect to CCl4 treated group [36].…”

“…It was reported that a carrot seed extract could lower the plasma levels of AST, ALT and bilirubin in a dose-dependent manner in CCl 4 induced hepatotoxicity [141] and lindane induced hepatotoxicity [142] where the carrot extract also restored the depressed antioxidant and HDL cholesterol levels to near normal values. Another study showed that oral treatment with kaempferol isolated from carrot seed reversed all the serum and liver parameters in the paracetamol treated rats [143].…”
