Herbal Compounds Play a Role in Neuroprotection through the Inhibition of Microglial Activation

Abstract: Since microglia possess both neuroprotective and neurotoxic potential, they play a crucial role in the central nervous system (CNS). Excessive microglial activation induces inflammation-mediated neuronal damage and degeneration. At present, numerous herbal compounds are able to suppress neurotoxicity via inhibiting microglial activation. Therefore, many researchers focus on pharmacological inhibitors of microglial activation to ameliorate neurodegenerative disorders. Further work should concentrate on the expl… Show more

“…Microglia are the resident macrophage cells in the central nervous system and host defense mechanisms producing pro-inflammatory cytokines and ROS (Lee et al, 2018). When activated during brain injuries or by invading pathogens, they produce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-16, TNFα, and TGF-β1 (Fu et al, 2018). Studies reveal that terpenes and terpenoids are involved in suppressing microglia-mediated inflammation involved in acute or chronic neurodegenerative diseases (Sundaram and Gowtham, 2012;Ong et al, 2015;Quintans et al, 2019).…”

“…In citrus fruits such as Citrus paradise and Citrus sinensis, Narngenin is a strong flavonoid found to be abundant. It has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties [ 5 , 43 ]. The study shows that narngenin has prevented neurotoxicity caused by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) by triggering the Nrf2-ARE signaling pathway.…”

“…They closely monitor the changes in the microenvironment around the brain and react quickly to maintain the balance of the brain microenvironment. However, although the activation of microglia plays a central role in the maintenance of normal physiological function of the brain, excessive activation can also induce a variety of neurotoxic effects [74, 75]. Previous studies on microglia centered on their function as mediators of injury, inflammation, and neurodegeneration [76-78].…”
