Herbivore diet in a semi-arid Eucalyptus populnea woodland. 1. Merino sheep

Abstract: The diet of sheep was recorded by direct observation in a shrub-dominated Eucalyptus populnea woodland between Nyngan and Bourke, N.S.W., on 7 occasions over a 2-year period. Different nutritional opportunities were provided by the effects of rainfall on 3 contrasting grazing treatments. The sheep did not graze equally over the whole area available but foraged selectively so that they encountered unacceptable plants rarely. In particular variable spear grass (Stipa variabilis) was avoided once the inflorescenc… Show more

“…Information is particularly lacking for cattle grazing the unimproved rangelands of northern Australia. Studies on diet selection by sheep (Wilson 1976;Lorimer 1978;Graetz and Wilson 1980;Harrington 1986;McMeniman et al 1986;Orr et al 1988) can provide additional information but extrapolation of diet selection from measurements with sheep to cattle may be misleading (Dudzinski and Arnold 1973;Wilson 1976;Squires 1980;Graetz and Wilson 1980).…”

“…The most preferred forages of Merino sheep are fresh and green annual grasses and ephemeral forbs. When these are available, they are eaten in large quantities Mulham 1966a, 1966b;Leigh and Mulham 1967;Robards et al 1967;Leigh et al 1968;McMeniman et al 1986;Wilson et al 1969;Dawson et al 1975;Ellis et al 1977;Loremer 1978;Wilson 1979;Graetz and Wilson 1980;Downing 1986;Harrington 1986a;Wilson 1991aWilson , 1991bDawson and Ellis 1994;Edwards et al 1995).…”

“…When annual grasses and ephemeral forbs are dry or unavailable, sheep consume large amounts of perennial grasses if these are green (Leigh and Mulham 1966b;Robards et al 1967;Leigh et al 1968;McMeniman et al 1986;Storr 1968;Ellis 1976;Ellis et al 1977;Loremer 1978;Wilson 1979;Graetz and Wilson 1980;Squires 1980Squires , 1982Harrington 1986a;Ellis 1994, 1996;Edwards et al 1995).…”
