Here, there, and everywhere

Abstract: Today, an increasing number of applications rely on location and proximity information to deliver services. With the introduction of Wi-Fi Fine Timing Measurement (FTM) in the IEEE 802.11-2016 standard, Wi-Fi derived location and proximity information will play a key role in many safety-and security-critical applications. For example, Wi-Fi FTM is adopted in Wi-Fi Aware where it enables geo-fencing and mobile identification. In this paper, we perform the first security analysis of Wi-Fi FTM and analyze its sec… Show more

“…The most common WiFi LOS identification method in the literature was based on the statistical features of the signal measures. Several works employed the Round Trip Time (RTT) [55][56][57][58][59][60], Received Signal Strength (RSS) [61][62][63][64]. The researchers in [65] used RSS in identifying LOS conditions.…”

“…That is, the firmware must not filter out any measurements results exceeding some pre-defined thresholds. Fortunately, for every card we tested, there is a suitable firmware version [12]. In Table 5.1, we present the results together with their standard deviation.…”

“…In addition to denial-of-service attacks disrupting the connection, our attacks can cause disruptions in time-sensitive operations such as Wi-Fi Fine Timing Measurement (FTM). Our queue-based disruption attacks, targeting measurement requests, extend the FTM vulnerabilities identified in [12,16].…”
