Heritability and Genotype × Environment Interactions for Discolored Rice Kernels

Abstract: Discolored kernels are but one component of rice (Oryza sativa L.) quality that requires attention by rice breeders. Discolored kernels are most often caused by damage from rice stink bugs [Oebalus pugnax (Fabricius)] and kernel smut disease (Tilletia barclayana Bref.), but other pathogens and physiological disorders can also contribute to kernel discoloration. Our objective was to further understand the inheritance and genotype × environment (GE) interactions for discolored rice kernels to improve rice kernel… Show more

“…Native traits have also featured prominently in research into the management of stem borers (46%) and defoliator caterpillars (41%) as well as rice water weevil (18%). The avoidance of genes involved in grain discolouration has been considered to reduce the impact of grain-sucking bugs (Gravois and Bernhardt, 2000). Furthermore, molecular approaches have been applied to understand shattering and dormancy as traits leading to the invasiveness of weedy rice and to understand gene flow between cultivated and weedy rice (62%).…”

“…Therefore, parameters estimation of different plant characteristics are important for having a selection relationship, in which, the greater the estimated value of a given parameter, the greater is the genotype choice success (Gravois and Bernhardt, 2000).…”
