Heritability and the genotype × environment interaction in soybean

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to examine the implication of the genotype × environment interaction (G × E) in the identification of genetically superior soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] progenies; to obtain estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters for agronomic traits in soybean progenies; and to select genetically superior progenies to obtain lineages. Progenies F 3:4 were evaluated in the municipalities of Lavras-MG and Itutinga-MG, Brazil, in the agricultural year 2016-2017. Progenies F 3:5 were e… Show more

“…However, for the TNP (20.37%); GPL (26.97%); NBN (33.54%) and HIP (38.55%) characters, this parameter was greater than 20% (Table 1). These CVe values (%) are in accordance with that presented in the literature for these characters in agricultural experiments in soybean culture (Bizari et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2018;Bianchi et al, 2020;Luiz et al, 2020;Mattos et al, 2020).…”

“…According to Shu et al (2020), genes involved in photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, and heat shock protein (HSP) pathways might contribute to the different responses of soybean seeds to deterioration. According to Bianchi, Bruzi, Soares, Ribeiro, and Gesteira (2020), obtaining superior genotypes can be considered as one of the main challenges for soybean breeders. These authors also reinforce the information of Gesteira, Bruzi, Zito, Fronza, and Arantes (2018) that the key stages include the selection of parentals/progenitors to perform the hybridizations, identification of the best progenies to advance in the program stages, evaluation of these progenies at different sites, and agricultural years to mitigate the effect of the genotype × environment interaction (G × E), and, finally, selection of the best lineage to be launched in the agricultural market.…”

“…This occurs because of environmental and genetic factors and their interaction exist on phenotypic variability. Besides, the estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters can be affected by G×E interaction [2]. Therefore, genetic diversity is more important in plant breeding.…”

“…The characters that will be used for selection must have high genetic variability and heritability so that the selection progress is also high [7,5]. However, the sites can change genotype behavior and the magnitude of heritability estimates [2].…”
