Heritability estimations for diseases, coat color, body weight, and height in a birth cohort of Boxers

Abstract: Results indicate that genetic improvement of most traits should be feasible, except for cardiac disorders. However, because most traits are influenced by environmental effects as well as genetic effects, genetic counseling based on polygenic inheritance and use of familial information rather than strict exclusion of parents is preferred.

“…Both SubAS and PS are heart 419 defects that severely hamper longevity and welfare of dogs. Several studies (Pyle et al, 1976;Patterson et al, 1981;Nielen et al, 2001) investigated genetic aspects of Sub AS and PS, but the mode of inheritance of these defects still remains unclear.…”

“…Reported abnormalities are different from those reported herein for SBTD. Cryptorchidism also occurs in domesticated animals or humans, with prevalence ranging from 3 to 20% (Klonisch et al 2004; Nielen et al 2001). …”

“…This is too simplistic. Approximately 25 years ago, the notion of a single locus gene problem gave way to acceptance of a polygenic recessive model, based on relatively small studies with pigs (Sittmann & Woodhouse 1977, Rothschild et al 1988; dogs (Cox et al 1978, Nielen et al 2001; and also for men (Czeizel et al 1981). Unfortunately, techniques of modern molecular genetics have not been applied to sub-human species with a sufficient incidence of cryptorchidism to justify a study of gene abnormalities (e.g.…”
