Heritage Building Preservation Through Building Information Modelling: Reviving Cultural Values Through Level of Development Exploration

Abstract: Despite the rich and diverse heritage buildings in Malaysia, they suffer from many problems and threats. Many heritage buildings are deteriorating, and this threatens the country’s cultural values. The deterioration of built heritage is a result of the poor inheritance of its related documentation and need to be addressed. Thus, this study brought forward the concept of preservation using Building Information Modelling (BIM). Exploring the potential of BIM as a preservation tool in reviving local cultural valu… Show more

“…As the concept of HBIM is still new to the industry, only a small number of works were identified in the literature. One of the projects is the analysis of building performance of Traditional Malay House using BIM (Zainudin, Haron, Bachek, & Jusoh, 2016), while its application to study the level of development and usage of BIM in heritage building is further discussed by Ali, Ismail, Hashim, Suhaimi, and Mustafa, (2018). Thus, in an effort to expand and promote HBIM to a wider community, the paper presents a review of the HBIM application and aims at illustrating its benefits in the field of cultural heritage documentation.…”

“…Heritage building information modeling (HBIM) is another widespread research area that is practical for analyzing various case studies such as historical churches and masonry bridges by using active or passive sensors [ 262 ]. Researchers studied HBIM applied to masonry bridge through Revit commercial BIM software, asset management and maintenance of Cultural Heritage (CH), controlling sustainability and usability of CH through scanner laser and photogrammetry, conducting web application for historical building management, HBIM for storing life-cycle data through non-destructive testing and other aspects of these subjects for better analysis of heritage structures [ 263 , 264 , 265 , 266 , 267 , 268 , 269 , 270 , 271 , 272 , 273 , 274 , 275 , 276 , 277 , 278 ].…”

“…According to Harun (2011) there are many building in Malaysia that are classified as historic buildings such as mosques, residential dwellings, schools, railway stations, hotels, churches, palaces, clock towers, prisons, government offices, forts, monuments, institutions and commercial sites. Ali (2018) added that it is crucial to preserve the elements and structures of heritage buildings. Guidelines for the conservation of heritage buildings are among the measures suggested for their protection.…”

“…This is because Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) needs more technical input to obtain all the data regarding the construction of heritage buildings. The implementation of HBIM within the Malaysian construction industry is however low and slow as it demands new skill sets, such as understanding the approach, professional 3D modelers, and comprehensive cooperation since it requires industry players to relate to each other differently (Ali et al, 2018). Therefore, it is crucial to take care of heritage buildings as the number is limited.…”
