A functionalized chitosan thiourea composite (CH-TU) was successfully synthesized using formaldehyde as a crosslinking agent for enhancing silver recovery from different aqueous solutions. Comparison sorption studies with a non-functionalized composite (CH-F) as a reference material were conducted. Grafting led to an improvement in the sorption performances, i.e., 0.763 mmol Ag g−1 for CH-F vs. 2.125 mmol Ag g−1 for CH-TU. The pseudo-first-order rate equation (PFORE) was fitted to the sorption kinetics at saturation times of 40 and 30 min for CH-F and CH-TU, respectively, while the sorption isotherms were fitted with Langmuir and Sips equations for both sorbents. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), nitrogen sorption–desorption isotherms (BET-surface area), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pH of the zero charge (pHpzc) were used to characterize and investigate the sorption mechanism. Sorption was performed three times to check the reproducibility, while the sorption performances were stable over 20 cycles, with a limited decrease in performance (5 and 3% for CH-F and CH-TU, respectively). Nitric acid solution (0.3 M) was efficient for desorbing the adsorbed metal ions. The grafted sorbent with thiourea is considered as a promising tool for recovering Ag(I) from acidic waste leachate derived from waste spent films.

Food safety issue caused by aflatoxins has aroused widespread concern in society. Herein, a novel fluorine-functionalized triazine-based porous organic polymer (F-POP) was developed for the first time by the simple condensation polymerization of 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine and cyanuric chloride. With in-built fluorine functional group (F) and imine group (−NH−), F-POP displayed significantly superior adsorption ability for aflatoxins, outperforming fluorine-free POP due to the multiple interaction mechanisms of hydrogen bond, F–O interaction, π–π interaction, F−π interaction, and hydrophobic interaction. Thus, magnetic F-POP was prepared by introducing Fe3O4 into F-POP and then utilized as a magnetic sorbent for the extraction of trace aflatoxins in peanut and rice samples prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method presented high sensitivity with the limit of detections at 0.005–0.15 ng g–1. F-POP also exhibited outstanding adsorption capability for many other organic pollutants, revealing its great potential for analysis or adsorption applications.

Determination of nitroimidazole antibiotics based on dispersive solid‐phase extraction combined with capillary electrophoresis

For a long time, the detection of nitroimidazole antibiotics (NIABs) has been a research focus in environmental analytical chemistry. In this work, a novel technique for the analysis of nitroimidazoles was established based on capillary electrophoresis (CE). UiO‐66, synthesized using a solvothermal method, was utilized as an adsorbent in the dispersive solid‐phase extraction (DSPE) of five different NIABs. The separation and detection of NIABs in environmental water samples were accomplished using the CE diode array detection method. The optimal extraction conditions were obtained after systematically studying the effects of adsorption time, the amount of extractant, and elution solvent on extraction efficiency. According to the results of the study, the limit of detections of the five NIABs were between 16 and 97 ng/mL, the relative standard deviations were between 0.32% and 0.55%, and the spike recoveries were between 87.43% and 104.8%. This study presents a novel technique for measuring NIABs in complex water samples.
