This framework proposes a heuristic algorithm based on LP (linear programming) for optimizing the electricity cost in large residential buildings, in a smart grid environment. Our heuristic tackles large multi-objective energy allocation problem (large number of appliances and high time resolution). The primary goal is to reduce the electricity bills, and discomfort factor. Also, increase the utilization of domestic renewable energy, and reduce the running time of the optimization algorithm. Our heuristic algorithm uses linear programming relaxation, and two rounding strategies. The first technique, called CR (cumulative rounding), is designed for thermostatic appliances such as air conditioners and electric heaters, and the second approach, called MCR (minimum cost rounding), is designed for other interruptible appliances. The results show that the proposed heuristic algorithm can be used to solve large MILP (mixed integer linear programming) problems and gives a decent suboptimal solution in polynomial time.

The decentralization of energy supply and the fluctuating feed-in from renewable energies lead to an increasing need to generate electricity and heat locally and efficiently. Therefore, different energy systems are used together at building level. Consequently, energy management systems (EMSs) in the building sector and households are becoming increasingly complex and are facing new challenges. To face these challenges, EMSs are required to enable efficient and combined operation of multiple energy systems and components. The increasing research into EMS is leading to a growing field of research with different characteristics, objectives, and algorithms. However, the resulting diversification of the research topic is accompanied by a lack of transparency. Therefore, this article is the first to provide a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the state of research. For this purpose, 98 relevant publications are quantitatively evaluated. This article focuses on methods, model characteristics, optimization objectives, price structures, observation horizon, and components and devices used of EMS. The detailed evaluation of these topics creates a high level of transparency in EMS research to provide precise insights into current research priorities and potential weaknesses, to allow researchers to classify their own work and to identify potential research topics. Development of smart grid technology provides an opportunity to various consumers in context for scheduling their energy utilization pattern by themselves. The main aim of this whole exercise is to minimize energy utilization and reduce the peak to average ratio (PAR) of power. The two way flow of information between electric utilities and consumers in smart grid opened new areas of applications. The main component is this management system is energy management controller (EMC), which collects demand response (DR) i.e. real time energy price from various appliances through the home gateway (HG). An optimum energy scheduling pattern is achieved by EMC through the utilization of DR information. This optimum energy schedule is provided to various appliances via HG. The rooftop photovoltaic system used as local generation micro grid in the home and can be integrated to the national grid. Under such energy management scheme, whenever solar generation is more than the home appliances energy demand, extra power is supplied back to the grid. Consequently, different appliances in consumer premises run in the most efficient way in terms of money. Therefore this work provides the comprehensive review of different smart home appliances optimization techniques, which are based on mathematical and heuristic one.
