Hidden flows assessment in the agri-food sector: evidence from the Italian beef system

Abstract: PurposeThe study proposes Material Flow Analysis (MFA) methodology as a tool to measure and qualify food waste in the Italian beef supply chain in each stage of the food supply chain, from farm to fork. In particular, the authors attempt to: (1) measure resources consumption and waste generation toward companies' and policymakers' sustainable evaluations; (2) enhance consumers' education in the field of agri-food resilience and sustainability.Design/methodology/approachMFA is applied to the entire Italian sect… Show more

“…In this context, this study on the origin and development of the Śmiłowo EIP (as part of the Farmutil consortium in Noteć valley, Poland) aims to assess the process of organization of the IS in the area of the meat and agri-food industries, considered as one of the most important sectors among which the principles of a CE should be achieved [ 24 ], by which wastes have a high potential to be valorized through IS strategies [ 25 ]. Additionally, the meat industry has the biggest ecological problems connected with the generation of hazardous waste, which is a great chance for implementing IS actions in the plants, due to the additive benefits from their products and by-products [ 26 ]. For industrial production dealing with hazardous waste, the implementation of IS is still a challenge [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…e.g., feed storage, farm management, and primary packaging production), and ends at the final consumption stage. Between these steps, slaughterhouse activities as well as meat processing and packaging activities require additional energy resources ( 11 ). Food waste is one of the major issues in the context of meat production.…”
