High-Capacity Hydrogen and Nitric Oxide Adsorption and Storage in a Metal−Organic Framework

Abstract: Gas adsorption experiments have been carried out on a copper benzene tricarboxylate metal-organic framework material, HKUST-1. Hydrogen adsorption at 1 and 10 bar (both 77 K) gives an adsorption capacity of 11.16 mmol H2 per g of HKUST-1 (22.7 mg g(-)1, 2.27 wt %) at 1 bar and 18 mmol per g (36.28 mg g(-)1, 3.6 wt %) at 10 bar. Adsorption of D2 at 1 bar (77 K) is between 1.09 (at 1 bar) and 1.20(at <100 mbar) times the H2 values depending on the pressure, agreeing with the theoretical expectations. Gravimetric… Show more

“…96 MOFs consist of transition metal ions/clusters and multidentate organic ligands, and are typically synthesized via coordinationdirected self-assembly processes under mild conditions ( Figure 4). 97 Over the past two decades, MOFs have been applied in photonics, 98 catalysis, [99][100][101] biosensors, 102,103 gas storage, [104][105][106][107] and drug delivery. [108][109][110][111] For drug delivery, the high drug-loading capacity of MOFs relies largely on three factors: 1) high surface area (3,100-5,900 m 2 /g) 108 and large, regular, accessible cages and tunnels; 2) good physicochemical stability in circulation and quick stimuli 109,113 -effectively in hexane solution.…”

“…Good agreement has been observed between crystallographic data and pore volumes measured by gas adsorption for microporous metal organic framework materials. 59,60 In these materials, V ad is assumed to be equal to the crystallographic pore volume, which is an inherent property of the adsorbent. 61,62 However, for heterogeneous materials, such as shales, which have a wide pore size distribution, this is more problematic since adsorption in the larger pores may not be significant.…”

“…Particularly, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have generated large interest owing to their versatile architectures [35] and their promising applications not only in ion exchange, adsorption and gas storage [36][37][38][39][40][41], separation processes [42], heterogeneous catalysis [43,44], polymerization reactions [45,46], luminescence [47], non-linear optics [48] and magnetism [49], but also as drug carriers, systems for drug delivery [22,23,50,51], contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [21] and systems with potential use in other biomedical applications [23].…”
