High circulating osteoprotegerin levels are associated with non-zero blood groups

Abstract: BackgroundOsteoprotegerin (OPG) and von Willebrand factor (VWF) form complex within endothelial cells and following secretion. The nature of blood group antigens strongly influences the levels of circulating VWF, but there is no available data concerning its ascendancy on OPG levels. We aimed to assess the relationship of AB0 blood groups with OPG, VWF levels (VWF: Ag) and collagen binding activity (VWF: CB) in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients.MethodsFunctional and laboratory parameters of 105 PAD pa… Show more

“…All together these studies took in account the endothelial dysfunction, an early and important trigger of atherogenesis, as mechanism responsible for PAD development and worsening. In this direction an interesting significant association of high OPG was found with the non-0 blood groups in PAD patients, considering that non-0 blood group subjects have a well-established higher risk of developing thrombotic episode of venous or arterial origin [ 49 ].…”

“…As reported for TRAIL, the blood levels of OPG are in the picogram (per milliliter) range with reported physiological fluctuations due to age and gender as well the blood-group, with higher circulating levels associated with non-zero blood groups [70]. OPG circulating levels change in several diseases.…”

“…Atherosclerosis-risk Absent Modules were only identified from the normal weighted signaling network, which were crucial to maintain the normal cell regulation and transport function. Absence of these modules in disease status would lead to the disorder of the signal of stem cells and the change of the internal environment so as to participate in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis 24 - 27 , 47 , 48 . The 3 Atherosclerosis-risk Absent Modules enriched significantly in the functional categories related to the maintenance of normal biological process, including “GO:0031328~positive regulation of cellular biosynthetic process”, “GO:0051173~positive regulation of nitrogen compound metabolic process” and “GO:0006935~chemotaxis”.…”
