High crystallinity polyethylene obtained in biphasic polymerization using pyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquid

Abstract: A series of N-n-alkylpyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquids [C n-py][AlCl 4 ] (where n-alkyl = n-butyl, n-hexyl, and n-octyl) was applied as a medium of the Cp 2 TiCl 2 catalyst, activated by AlEtCl 2 or AlEt 2 Cl, to evaluate the influence of the studied ionic liquids on the performance of the biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization and the properties of the produced polyethylene (PE). The best results were obtained using N-n-butylpyridinium chloroaluminate. The polyethylene obtained in the bip… Show more

“…The changes of the values of χ DSC − 2 and χ WAXS − α for PP/S4SQ composites demonstrate almost the same tendency. Some slight differences between them may be caused by sensitivity and specificity of each method which was already described elsewhere .…”

“…The activities of these SIL systems with imidazolium ionic liquid are lower (555.7, 316.5 and 1171.4 kg PE (mol V) −1 (0.5 h) −1 , respectively, for S 1–3 ) as compared to those for the SIL systems with pyridinium ionic liquid (837.7, 506.3 and 2128.0 kg PE (mol V) −1 (0.5 h) −1 ) (Table , entries 1, 5 and 13). Thus, the use of the pyridinium ionic liquid proves to be advantageous, as it is also in the case of biphasic ionic liquid–hexane ethylene polymerization . Pyridinium ionic liquids are characterized by higher densities as compared to imidazolium analogues at relatively low viscosities .…”

“…This work describes a study of ethylene polymerization using a series of SIL systems, in which the Cp 2 VCl 2 vanadocene catalyst was immobilized on three types of silica, which were modified by covalent anchorage of a pyridinium ionic liquid. The pyridinium ionic liquid was applied previously in biphasic ethylene polymerization, which led to PE with very high crystallinity . Also, the pyridinium ionic liquid has been immobilized on mesoporous silica SBA‐15 and applied in Knoevenagel reaction, which results in very good yields .…”

“…Rogers and co-workers (107) Recently there have been reports of the use of biphasic RTIL systems for metallocene-catalyzed polymerization of ethylene (108,109). Ionic liquid modified silica has also been used in combination with metallocenes for ethylene polymerization (110).…”
