High‐Efficiency Mixing Chip with Liquid Flow Actuators Operated by Surface Acoustic Waves

Abstract: SUMMARY Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices can be used as component parts for micro total analysis systems (μTAS) because their structures are very simple. We thus fabricated a mixing chip with liquid flow actuators operated only by SAWs. The chip consists mainly of one Y‐type flow channel, two pumps, and one mixer. The pumps are located in the upstream areas of the merging point of the flow channel, and the mixer is located in its downstream area. Additionally, the flow actuators have interdigital transducer… Show more

“…, droplet or microwell), new strategies are emerging for continuous flow mixing. 175,176 This offers additional challenges as the bulk flow can decrease the residence time in the mixing region, which subsequently decreases the mixing intensity and/or concentration effectiveness. Recently, Gracioso Martins et al used this approach to design a fully miniaturized flow injection analysis-chemiluminescence (FIA-CL) system with an integrated, on-board-powered SAW microcentrifuge (Fig.…”

“…Two types of continuous micropump were reported. 13,47,48) One is the jet-type micropump realized by Shiokawa and coworkers. 13,47) The other is the planar micropump realized by Saiki et al 48) The continuous micropump can be applied to a microfluidic system.…”

“…Therefore, the SAW actuator has a simpler structure than the ultrasonic wave device and has the major advantage of being easily fabricated. Note that, in related studies on SAW actuators, liquid flow has been mainly reported, (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) and there are very few reports on the transport of solids. (7,15) Currently, copper powder has been the only powder reported to be transported toward the SAW downstream side.…”
