High Genetic Diversity and Low Differentiation of Michelia coriacea (Magnoliaceae), a Critically Endangered Endemic in Southeast Yunnan, China

Abstract: Michelia coriacea, a critically endangered tree, has a restricted and fragmented distribution in Southeast Yunnan Province, China. The genetic diversity, genetic structure and gene flow in the three extant populations of this species were detected by 10 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers and 11 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Examination of genetic diversity revealed that the species maintained a relatively high level of genetic diversity at the species level (percentage of polymorphic bands) PP… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported for Betula humilis (Jadwiszczak et al 2012), Prunus spinosa and Nouelia insignis (Luan et al 2006;Zhao et al 2012). It has been suggested that such high levels of genetic diversity may reflect only recent (postestablishment) population size reductions, especially in the last two generations.…”

“…It is expected that species with limited geographical ranges should possess relatively lower genetic diversity than species with wide distributions (Luan et al 2006;Wang et al 2012;Zhao et al 2012). As expected from birch and woody species, the Iranian birch populations are genetically diverse (H T = 0.932) because the species in general has a wide distribution.…”

“…Полученные нами данные со-гласуются с результатами исследований, показывающих, что некоторые редкие и исчезающие виды могут поддер-живать высокий уровень генетического разнообразия даже при малых размерах их популяций (Rossetto et al, 1995;Ci et al, 2008;Gordon et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2014;Wu et al, 2014).…”

“…Genetic diversity plays an important role in the survival and adaptability of a species, and it is largely attributed to several life history traits, such as geographic range, seed dispersal mechanism, mating system, life form, and taxonomic status Tian et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2012;Liu et al, 2013;Ghaffari et al, 2014). Compared to widespread species, many endemic and rare species usually show low levels of genetic diversity because of their habitat fragmentation Sow et al, 2014).…”
