High Improvement in Lactic Acid Productivity by New Alkaliphilic Bacterium Using Repeated Batch Fermentation Integrated with Increased Substrate Concentration

Abstract: Optically pure lactic acid (LA) is an important chemical platform that has a wide range of industrial and biotechnological applications. Improved parameters for cost effective LA production are of great interest for industrial developments. In the present study, an alkaliphilic lactic acid bacterium, BoM 1-2, was selected among 369 newly obtained bacterial isolates. It was characterized using API 50 CHL kit and identified as Enterococcus hirae BoM 1-2 by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Efficient polymer-grade… Show more

“…The repeated batch fermentation strategy involves the inoculation of a part or all of the free or immobilized cells into the next batch of fresh medium [ 12 ]. In addition, compared with fed-batch fermentation, repeated batch fermentation lasts longer and requires less labor [ 13 ]. Economically, repeated batch fermentation increases product yield because only one inoculation is required [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…In an industrial point of view, the decrease in productivity is a disadvantage because it lengthens the process and thus increases the cost [ [25] , [26] , [27] ]. However, the bulk price of the HMCS ($370/ton) was approximately 94.6-fold lower than that of the pure maltose ($35,000/ton) ( https://www.alibaba.com ).…”

“…In this context, [29] isolated Enterococcus faecalis CBRD01 from soil and used it for LA production. Also [30] isolated Enterococcus hirae and used it for LA production. In the same direction, [31] could use new isolated strain of Enterococcus faecium for production of lactic acid.…”
