High pass filter based on one-dimensional graded photonic crystal

Abstract: In this study, a graded thickness photonic crystal is studied containing metamaterial and air multilayers. Transmission spectra are calculated using the transfer matrix method. The transmission values of proposed structure increases with frequency and attain values as unity, which can show an application as optical high pass filter. The frequency corresponding to half transmission value i.e. cut-off frequency of proposed optical high pass filter can be tuned with the graded index parameter.

“…Many researchers are interested in 1D PC structures, which can be made of dielectric, chalcogenide, plasma, metamaterial, superconductor, and so on 5 12 In a conventional 1D PC, adding a new layer or removing one layer works as an optical cavity that introduces a defect mode at the resonant wavelength into the PBG. The geometrical characteristics of the defect layer, such as thickness and refractive index, can be tuned to affect the defect mode along with angle of incidence and number of layers on either sides of defect layer 1 , 2 .…”

“…Such PBG is responsible for many potential applications of PCs as optical filter, optical sensor, switch etc. [2][3][4][5][6][7]. As per the periodicity of dielectric in space, PCs are classified in three different kinds as one-dimensional (1-D) PC [8], twodimensional (2-D) PC [9] and three-dimensional (3-D) PC [1].…”
